SUMMARY

Climate as an intelligent force, a reckoning, or an uncaring system ready for vengeance. Stories where nature is not necessary “evil,” simply done negotiating.

We seek climate and environmental horror stories that terrify and captivate readers. Humans have wreaked havoc on the Earth for centuries. Now, our planet and other inhabitants want justice. Nature fights back, landscapes transform in ways that feel intentional. Think eco-horror where the horror arises from:

  • Ecosystems turn hostile. Parasites, evolutionary anomalies due to rapid climate change, glaciers break and melt uncovering hidden horrors, sea level rise, air/water/noise pollution,
  • Human hubris/apathy/greed, and nature’s vengeance, etc.
  • Extreme weather and climate collapse.
  • Natural horror. Plants, forests, fungi, or invasive species reclaiming what’s theirs (territory, food chain, shelter, etc.) Oceans, ice, rivers expose their fangs.
  • Toxic landscapes or industrial ruins take a terrifying turn.
  • Animal resistance. Behavior that is primal, inevitable, and deliberate.
  • Psychological horror and dread. Metaphor. Quiet horror. Moral tension.
  • Earth acting with intention against humanity.
  • Keep stories within the Anthropocene epoch. Human influence era (last 8-10K years) which includes the agricultural revolution, industrial revolution, and the great acceleration of the mid-20th century (plastics, nuclear fallout, mass production, and explosive population growth).

As long as the horror is rooted in the environment and the sense of inevitability is palpable, it belongs here.

WHAT WE’RE NOT LOOKING FOR

  • Post-apocalyptic stories with no ecological factor
  • Explicit depictions of violence or gore without being rooted in the theme
  • Sexual violence
  • Humans triumph through technology alone
  • Pure sci-fi without horror elements
  • Zombies, creatures, or simple disasters
